On Wednesday, December 17, 2008, SBE Chapter
85 joined members of SBE Chapter 56 at the OETA studios in Oklahoma City for the first
of four DTV Transition phone bank events. The turnout of volunteers was fantastic!
Please click here for pictures!
The room was filled with the finest engineers in the great state of Oklahoma, it was an
impressive sight.
The Tulsa contingency was very there en masse! It was an outstanding showing from SBE
Chapter 56.
SBE Chapter 85 was equally powered up. We had 15 members of SBE Chapter 85 who attended
in droves at both the 5:20PM and 10:20PM tests.
Vance Harrison, Bill Thrash, Mark Norman and John McCarroll were quite pleased with the
manpower. There was literally more engineers than there was phones.
Everyone was extremely polite, helpful and eager to help our fellow Oklahoma viewers,
it was truly amazing.
One of the best benefits, is that it was FUN!
One of Four is in the can. The next stop is January 12th-2009.
Special Thanks to Vance and Nancy for providing dinner, the OAB is known for their
generosity.

Please Join us in Congratulating Mr. Dana Cole.
|
|
Dana has become Chapter 85's most recent SBE
Certificate holder after being awarded the CEV (Certified Video Engineer). At our December
18th meeting, Dana was presented with a check from the Chester Grubbs Memorial Certification
Fund. Dana's professional electronics education Began in 1962 at Keesler AFB(Biloxi),
in aircraft navigation systems, then on to Altus AFB for cross-training in fire-control
(radar-controlled turret on B-52's). Later Dava became a studio engineer for a small video
production studio at the Stillwater Board of Education eventually leading to his current job
of working for the State Department of CareerTech as video engineer. Through it all, Dana has
exhibited the best qualities of SBE members including receiving his Master's Degree in
Telecommunications Management from OSU.
|
|
Please welcome SBE Chapter 85 Member, Gayle Scott.
|
|
Gayle Scott is affiliated with The Oklahoma
Department of Career and Technology Education in Stillwater where she is the
Traffic Manager.
|
|
Gayle grew up with her dad as the
chief engineer in radio and television in Stillwater, Oklahoma, for KSPI, KVRO, and KOSU.
She went out with him a few times to the transmitter site, and he let her tag
along on a few remotes for the OSU Cowboys football games. She was always
intrigued by what he did, little knowing she would one day find herself
working in this arena.
|
|
Prior to 2000, she was an administrative assistant in Human Resources, a
division of the Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education.
Gayle would drop by the television studio/control room occasionally and
visit the guys there. So, they decided if she was going to hang
out that they may as well let her in as more of a permanent fixture. So
Gayle began working with Educational Technology Resources in
January of 2000. As a division, and also in 2000, they were instrumental
in planning/developing and implementing the CareerTech Learning Network,
a network of online distance education classes utilizing video streaming
and sometimes together with some real-time video conferencing. They
produce training videos to go along with textbook curriculum that is
sold to career and technology education schools and instructors both
in-state and out-of-state. In 2004 they began producing a weekly
television show, Oklahoma HORIZON, that airs on OETA with subsequent
runs on other stations/networks across the state as well as nationally
on RFD-TV over DirectTV and Dish Network, the show airs on a travel
channel in Europe as well.
Since January of 2000, Gayle has been learning television engineering skills
and control room operations from her friend, mentor, and Chief
Engineer, Dana Cole. Gayle joined SBE Chapter 85 as a way to gain even
more knowledge and updates as well as the networking. Gayle says, "I appreciate
being accepted as a member and I look forward to getting to know the rest of you."

Please welcome SBE Chapter 85 Member, Mr. Dana Cole.
|
|
Dana's electronics training began
in 1962 at Keesler AFB(Biloxi), in aircraft navigation systems. In 1963 Dana was
transferred to Altus AFB to begin his cross-training into fire-control
(radar-controlled turret on B-52's). After the Air Force, Dana received his degree
in English Education from OSU. However Dana's passion was not in teaching, so he
turned his eyes on TV repair and cable maintenance. In 1975 became a studio engineer
for a small video production studio at the Stillwater Board of Education. This led
Dana to his current job of working for the State Department of CareerTech as video
engineer (studio production training and promotional programs).
|
|
In 1997, Dana received his Master's
degree in telecommunications management from OSU.
|
|
In 2004, Dana's organization began production
of "Oklahoma Horizon," which provides 52 half-hour shows a year aired on OETA,
several cable affiliates, and the RFD channel on satellite.
Dana's goal now is to work towards his SBE certifications, beginning with Certified
Video Engineer. Once Dana completes that goal, he plans to dredge up some of his
old knowledge about radio and radar transmitters, study modern transmitters and
antennas and FCC rules, and see if he can tackle the exam for the Certified Broadcast
Television Engineer certificate.
